This blog is about the development of Whispering Horse Winery – a family boutique winery in Yarrow, British Columbia, Canada. Here, we share our experience developing the winery, including all the ideas, decisions, opportunities,  and challenges we face along our way.

My name is Melissa and I have an extraordinary weakness for all things involving wine and food.  Aside from our adventures described here, I also have a PhD in health geography.

Romanée-Conti in France

My husband, Laurent,  is a Belgian/Canadian with Italian roots and is never short of passion. In addition to being the catalyst for the Whispering Horse Winery, Laurent is also a philosopher, teacher, and published poet.

My parents, Barry and Shirley, are the backbone of this endeavor. Without them, none of this would have be possible.

    Hi there,

I was wondering if you would consider having a wedding at the J Bar Ranch? My uncle used to work there when I was little and take my brothers and I out riding. My fiance and I are looking for a big old barn to hold our reception at. It has been a long time since I have been there, so things may have changed alot!
We would be more than happy to pay a venue hire fee and insurance and all the usual event stuff.

Please let me know if you are at all interested.

    Kind Regards,
    Kiyomi Kitagawa

  2. Hi Kiyomi,

Congratulations on your engagement and thank you for your interest in using J-Bar ranch for your wedding reception. I love the idea of holding a wedding reception in a big old barn, especially one that your uncle used to work at years ago! Unfortunately, beginning in spring next year, the arena will be undergoing a much needed cleaning and a massive renovation process will begin, which includes giving the building a new roof, new paint job, and converting a large section of the building into an actual winery and tasting room.

Unless your wedding is planned to take place in 3 to 4 years, I’m afraid we’ll not be ready to host such an important event as your wedding. But thank you again for your interest and I wish you the best of luck on your search.

    All the best,
